Yoga Mat Bag, FO

Yoga Mat Bag from Last Minute Knitted Gifts is done. It's just about dry. It came out way too long for the yoga mat which is hiding inside and only come up to the top end of the Kureyon. It will work well for a very tall yoga practitioner. The areas that I stranded pulled in a bit and the Kureyon did not felt as much as the Cascade giving it a bit of the "boa constrictor that swallowed a meal" look. The top bells out a bit. This happened to the one other bag I felted in the machine. Anyone know why that happens and how to prevent it?
I made this for someone who actually does yoga, but don't know if I will actually gift it since it seems too big. Maybe with a bit of surgery...? My yoga practice so far has only progressed to watching one video, but hey, I have the mat so who knows? I guess I could use it to store my yardsticks or if I ever take up golf....

The bottom of the bag is very clever. The extra rows give it a nice edge and alternating K2tog and SSK decreases pretty much hide shaping after the felting is done.
A new technique for me was knitting the icord edging along the strap. It was very easy and well explained in the pattern and gives the edge of the strap a nice smooth, firm edge.

I found some cute Maneki Neko ceramic beads at Creations by You. They were a bit big, so I made them into stitch markers for larger size needles.

The stitch markers are so cute! Would re-felting the bag help? (I don't know much about felting!) :)

I love the Yoga Mat Case and I really adore those stitch markers. I haven't had a chance to swing by Creations By You yet. Hopefully I'll be able to get there soon, but if the beads are really large then I won't have as much use for them since I mainly use stitch markers for lace. :(

Just think about all the different techniques you learned knitting the yoga mat case.

Sometimes there is a significant difference in the felting properties of different brands. The dyes, type of wool and processing also affect the felting rates. Noro yarns usually take longer to felt than Galway, Cascade and Brown Sheep yarns.

I love how the bag turned out. And please don't fret on its length. when I made Rasha's (Knitty's Namaste), she wanted it extra long so she could fit a small towel near the opening. Love those beads!!

Gee, I like the flared top. I think the bag is beautiful.

I looked at the website but couldn't find those beads. More clues, please? --Syl

i like how the yoga mat case came out - it looks very happy! i think patrice had that same thing happen with the top opening of one of her felted bags looking a bit stretched out - she explained a remedy - something about basating the top with cotton before tossing in the machine (check her blog) - to kinda hold it together i think; you can ask her, i think she's coming to the meet-up tomorrow....btw, those beads are too cute! i haven't been to creations by you for a couple years now....

The flared top may actually come in handy - a lot of mats don't slide in and out easily of mat bags. It turned out great! I love the colors.

And given that I also love Totoros, I think it goes without saying that I covet your stitch markers. ;)

Yeah, sometimes we just feel like knitting stockinette stitches! I agree. Love the way your mat case came out. You put together some nice colors stripes.

Wow, I love your yoga bag! It's beautiful with the colors and design. I've noticed Kureyon not felting as well as other yarns, too. I've made a bag where the Cascade 220 felted into a nice stiff fabric but the Kureyon was still loose. Who knows why?

I really like how the bottom came out...neat circular design, and I like the edges. You can always cut your excess felted material a bit shorter, then reattach the handle.

Oh, I love your stitch markers too!
