My Ella Dilemma

Ella has been challenging me all the way. I have to face it, I have laceknit block. But I was bound and determined not to let this Ella get the best of me. After seeing Chris's wonderful Ella in variegated ocean greens and blues, and being egged on by the Aloha Knitters, I decided I had found the perfect project for my Woolarina handpainted yarn. I've been whining about this project quite a bit, and I am happy to say it is done, or that is to say it is sort of done. I got nearly to the end and ran out of yarn. I was soooo close. I was in full denial when blogless Michelle recommended a yarn saving maneuver. And there I was staring at that little ball of yarn, willing it to grow. I frogged back the left wing, and now I have an asymmetric shawl. I will have to stare at it for awhile before blocking and photographing it. The left brain me wants to frog back the right wing to match. Part of me wants to just let her be, and call it art. The yarn was wonderful and took the abuse very well. I love the colors, pink and green.

Meanwhile I took Erin's Eyelet Earring Class at the Bead Gallery on the spur of the moment. I pretty much just copied the class sample. It was quite fun and the pounding and sanding was relaxing. I came home and the fence dudes were finishing up the fence. I like it a lot. They have to come back when it stops raining to stain it.
I made one pearl necklace and finished out the evening with Battlestar Gallactica. My son had a good laugh last night as I waited for it to come on the wrong night.

I really love the idea of an asymmetric shawl - I'd *so* suggest to really let it be as it is, call it art (which it definitely is!) and be proud of it! And gosh, I so absolutely hear you on running out of yarn - it seems to me that I'm forever getting nervous about having too little yarn left - I'd really, really wish for one single project that I could work on without any cold sweats of fear!

Wow, cool jewelry! I like making my own jewelry, too, and find it very relaxing. Although, with the kids running around, it's hard to find my stuff. It tends to "walk" off with my toddler . . . .

Your Ella is gorgeous and I love the colours. I agree with dipsy, leave it be and call it art!

BTW, your jewelry is amazing!

a lace project -- you did it! congratulations! i think our askew ellas are not lost causes -- it's is all in the way it's worn. if it's placed on the shoulders with point in back, then turned 45 degrees to the left, the long right wing can be securely draped across the chest and over the left shoulder. the shorter left wing can then drape down or be tucked at the neck. at least that's how i'd wear it if i were going to keep it, and that's how i'm going to advise the intended recipient to wear it. overall it knit up pretty quickly, so if i make another one, i'll be sure to weight the amount of yarn used in one motif to know if i'll run out again. thanks for posting the modification.

Hooray for Ella's completion!! Can't wait to see it; will she make an appearance on Thursday night? Ella the dog is smaller than she was supposed to be, as well...
If you can finish Ella, I might have to finish Kiri, just to keep up. Yikes. The bar has been raised!

More jewelry. You are not one to sit around idle. Both pieces are pretty.

Always such pretty things on your blog! The quilting, the knitting, the jewelry - you're never idle, are you? I'm sure Ella will look gorgeous.

Please don't worry about Ella, she'll be an FO in no time! And like your sewing and fiber projects, your jewelry is ALWAYS gorgeous.

I love those earrings! They have the coolest classes at bead gallery. I've always wanted to learn how to do that riveting. My girlfriend took a class there with an instructor from the mainland and made a super cool necklace with riveting. I've only taken the basic wire wrapping and a kumihimo class.
